Send Out Resumes

For your first attempt to find contract work, I recommend creating a flood of resumes. Find ads in the local newspaper and send your resume to every company that advertises an opening for an employee with your skills. The companies are usually looking for permanent people, so be careful to say in your cover letter that you are looking for contract work. You don't want to waste people's time—that doesn't help you get hired. Most of your resumes will probably be "filed" and disappear into some corporate Bermuda Triangle. Some will make it to the appropriate hiring person. A few of those will be given consideration. And a few of those will result in an interview. If only one of those interviews results in a consulting position, it will have been worthwhile.
