CONS: Jealousy

Jealousy is not usually a factor, but I've seen it happen. In other words, sometimes some employees are not happy with the fact that a consultant has been hired to do work that they feel that they can do. Even worse, they know that you are earning more money that they are. This is not true for all employees. Most employees realize that as a consultant you are recognized as having particularly well developed skills in an area that the company needs. This justifies your high income. Also, they know that you will be with the company temporarily and are missing out on the benefits and stability that they enjoy. Most employees hold no ill feelings. But occasionally, some employee will not be so understanding, particularly if you are performing some function that he or she wanted to do. How do you deal with this type of person? Be yourself. Be pleasant. And do your job. Most people will not harbor bad feelings for long. If the person keeps you from completing your tasks, inform his or her manager. If a bad situation exists, finish the job the best you can and move on. That's the advantage of consulting. You can always move on.
