Conferences

Conferences are a wonderful place to "network" and get yourself known. Not only that, but it gives you a chance to find out about the latest technologies. The following are good opportunities at conferences.

  1. Give a paper or a tutorial. There is almost nothing better for improving your reputation, increasing your rates, and making contact with potential clients. Find a conference that concerns a topic about which you have done some work. If the work is interesting and unique, offer to give a paper. Many professional magazines have listings of conferences, and many conferences will take a paper that describes an interesting design project. It is especially good if the conference is put on by a trade group or a company as opposed to an academic organization, because these look for practical design examples and lessons. If you know your subject well, you can give a tutorial. Not only can tutorials generate extra income, but this defines you as an expert in your field, allowing you to raise your rates.

  2. Go around to the booths of the different vendors at the conference. Many companies keep lists of consultants to give to their customers. Ask about getting on them. Also, some companies give discounts or free tools to consultants. Ask about this. If nothing else, pick up a demo disk, a brochure, or at least some toy like a yo-yo or T-shirt.

  3. Network. Don't be shy. Go around and meet people. Give out your business card. You never know where your next job will come from.
